Hi, I'm Joan
I’ve been a science educator for over 17 years. Throughout my career, I have worked with hundreds of students teaching and tutoring primarily high school chemistry and physics courses. I’ve noticed that no matter where and how I taught, a large number of students struggled with the material. Whether students were from low socioeconomic backgrounds or wealthy ones, urban or rural environments, large classes or individual tutoring, there were still so many students who put effort into science class, but weren’t where they wanted to be. I’ve been told my clear explanations of content and approachable, relatable nature make me an excellent teacher, but that wasn’t what was missing for these students. Because high school science courses are heavily content based, teachers don’t have the time or freedom to hone in on the skills that make students successful in high school science courses. Sure, students learn those skills in elementary and middle school, but high school courses (especially chemistry and physics) are different! I wanted to create a way to help those students who want to get better at science, do so by learning the skills necessary to become a successful science student.
